About Us
Barkers opened its doors in 1922 making weighing scales for the trade and general public, 4 years after the end of WWI. The business quickly grew and diversified with new market trends and became suppliers of bicycles, ironmongery, glass, electrical, timber, wallpaper and paint.
With an increasing demand for building, plumbing, decorating and hardware supplies in Clapham, Wandsworth and Battersea area, this sector was fully adopted and extended to meet the demand. In essence, our customers have shaped and continue to define our business even today.
Barkers is an independently owned store firmly rooted in local community supplying the trade, DIY and residents of south London with Home & Building supplies for almost a century but has faced many challenges over the years.
Our premises narrowly escaped a bomb dropped in WWII by only 200 yards which destroyed the corner of Queentowns Road. We have weathered six economic recessions, the rise of large DIY chain stores and the age of the internet.
Our endurance is owed to our customers who have supported us through it all and has shown that ethics, accountability, traditional values and a truly local service continues to stand the test of time.
